Overall Score
My experience with the Mitsubishi RVR as a whole has been good. It has fully folding back seats, with the option to leave one seat up, and one down. It is kept down usually for the dog. The interior layout it convenient, and the side doors have cupholders as well as center console. It is simple to switch to 4x4 with just a click of a button. What I don't like is it doesnt have much "go" - it is a 1 gear, computer driven vehicle. The one gear takes a lot of getting used to, especially when driving up hill, if someone cuts infront of me, it is impossible to get back up to speed; there is a lot of lag, and takes some time to get up to speed even on a flat stretch - the sound it makes instead of shifting sounds bad for the engine. It also has a tendancy to overheat on long highway roadtrips. The last time it went for a long drive, within half an hour it was flashing "slow down" while I did the speed limit of 110km/h

Issue: On certain vehicles, incorrect programming in the electronic control unit for the continuously variable transmission (CVT-ECU) may cause engine damage under specific circumstances. If this happens, the engine could stall and you may not be able to restart it. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Mitsubishi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to reprogram the CVT-ECU.

Issue: On certain vehicles, road salt can corrode the front cross-member (subframe). As a result, a lower control arm could eventually detach from the cross-member. This could cause a loss of vehicle control. Safety Risk: A loss of control can create the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Mitsubishi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the front cross-member (subframe). If no significant corrosion is found, the dealer will spray a sealing and anti-corrosion coating both inside and on the cross-member. If significant corrosion is found, the dealer will replace the cross-member.

On certain vehicles, an issue in the software that manages the brake system Hydraulic Unit may allow it to reset without warning and could cause some vehicle features to malfunction. If this were to occur while driving, the following features may be affected: automatic braking (if Automatic Cruise Control (ACC) and/or Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) is in operation), Antilock Braking System (ABS), Active Stability Control (ASC), Brake Auto Hold (BAH). If these systems malfunction, there could be an increased risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will update the Hydraulic Unit control software.

On certain vehicles, an issue in the software used by the Electronic Control Unit responsible for managing the Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) feature may cause it to not operate as intended alerting the driver to brake unnecessarily in certain situations. If the driver attempts to brake while FCM is also activating, the vehicle may decelerate rapidly. This could create a situation where another motorist does not anticipate a preceding vehicle’s sudden brake application or stop, creating the risk of a rear-end collision causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will update the software for the Forward Collision Mitigation system.

On certain vehicles, water may drain from the windshield cowl area onto the front wiper link ball joint. Over time, this could result in corrosion and/or wear to the joint, which could result in the separation of the wiper link ball. If separation were to occur, the windshield wipers could become inoperative, which could limit the driver’s visibility under certain operating conditions which may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the wiper link rod with a countermeasure one, and will inspect the wiper motor crank arm and replace as necessary.

On certain vehicles, insufficient rust prevention to the parking brake shaft and insufficient sealing performance of the rear brake caliper boot could allow water to penetrate inside these components causing corrosion. As a result, the parking brake shaft may become stuck causing brake dragging and/or decreased parking brake performance. Additionally, the automatic adjuster for the brake pad clearance of the rear brake caliper with the built-in parking brake may not work correctly. These conditions could lead to a vehicle rollaway, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect and repair the rear brakes as necessary.

On certain vehicles, the flange of the drive belt automatic tensioner may crack over time due to repetitive high load operations and stress concentration. This could cause the drive belt to detach, leading to battery depletion, which would result in a loss of motive power and a loss of power steering assist. These issues could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the auto tensioner with a countermeasure unit.

On certain vehicles, the outer tubes of the rear liftgate support struts may have had insufficient anti-corrosion treatment applied during manufacturing. As a result, the outer tube could corrode due to salt and water penetration. On certain vehicles, water may drain from the windshield cowl area and potentially collect in the area of the wiper motor breathing hole. If the wiper motor is not operating, water could potentially enter the wiper motor through the breathing hole. If this occurs, over time, it could result in corrosion and/or an electrical conduction failure, both of which could result in the wiper motor not operating. If the wiper motor were to stop operating, the windshield wipers would become inoperative, which could limit the driver’s visibility under certain operating conditions which may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. On certain vehicles, the lap end attachment fastener on the front passenger seat belt may not have been torqued to proper specification. If the tightening torque of the fastener is too low, road vibrations could cause the fastener to loosen further. If this were to occur, the fastener may not properly restrain the front passenger occupant in the event of a crash, which could increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant in a crash. On certain vehicles, the drive belt material may cause abnormal pulley wear. If the vehicle is driven under this condition, the drive belt may become damaged from the worn pulley and detach, affecting electrical charging system and cooling system function and would illuminate the engine warning lamp(s) on the instrument panel. This could result in battery depletion and an overheated engine, resulting in a loss of motive power. Vehicles equipped with a hydraulic power steering system could also experience loss of power steering assist. These issues could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.
